What is the pupil premium?


Pupil premium is funding to improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in schools in England. Evidence shows that disadvantaged children generally face additional challenges in reaching their potential at school and often do not perform as well as other pupils.

Pupil premium at Shenstone?


All pupils at Shenstone School present with severe or complex learning needs, including some children who may have more profound or medical needs. Shenstone School is a specialist school that supports the learning and development needs of pupils with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP). The pupils at Shenstone School are all disadvantaged due to their severe learning difficulties; some may also be disadvantaged due to their socioeconomic circumstances. The school receives pupil premium funding to improve social and educational outcomes for these pupils.


Barriers to learning are primarily developmental, focusing on enabling pupils to acquire communication, independence, physical, regulation and social skills within the school, home and the wider community. Our strategy is underpinned by evidence-informed research, focusing on removing barriers to learning through targeted support and providing early and ongoing intervention for pupils and their families.


Intended outcomes

This explains the outcomes we aim for by the end of our current strategic plan and how we will measure whether the outcomes have been achieved.

Families feel supported and able to meet their children’s complex needs - Ensure children and families have high-quality support and advice, and where needed, families are supported to access external services and benefits. FWL to become an ACE tutor. Families are given opportunities to engage in informal and structured learning opportunities.

Targeted pupils have access to high-quality tutoring, which supports them to make accelerated progress in reading - Literacy Tutor to support targeted Pupils /Students working at both pre-reading and reading skills, including phonics. 

Children regulate their sensory systems which positively impact on their behaviour and ability to learn, in school, at home and in the wider community - Children with identified sensory processing issues or dysregulation access provision coordinated through the additional OT time purchased.

All Year 6 pupils will have the opportunity to access a one-night residential - Year 6 pupils will attend a one-night residential where they will engage in a range of high-quality experiences that enable them to generalise understanding and provide opportunities to develop practical and independent skills.

Targeted support and interventions enable pupils to use a range of communication systems to aid their understanding and to develop expressive and purposeful communication in school, at home, and in the community - ACE Tutor (communication) to use Universal, targeted and specialist interventions offered to enhance the curriculum to provide opportunities for increased engagement, enjoyment, attention, motivation and spontaneous communication in school and the community.

Universal, targeted and specialist interventions offered to enhance the curriculum to provide opportunities for increased engagement, enjoyment, attention, motivation and spontaneous communication in school and the community - Specialist Music teacher Tutoring for targeted groups from a SEND Drama / Music specialist two days per week to enrich children’s learning through music and drama. The learning focus supports engagement and communication that they may have missed out on during the pandemic. Offering additional support opportunities to increase attention levels will benefit the children being supported.

Pupils’ learning is not affected by hunger. Targeted pupils explore/eat different breakfast foods - Through our observations and from staff feedback, we have recognised a reduction in behaviour issues around food in the morning since beginning the Magic breakfast initiative.
